#other fish #they're gorgeous!I'm kinda proud that this setup turned out well! It's my first time doing a backwater tank 😃!
It's been around 3.5 months (cycle, seasoning, and monitoring after adding my juvenile betta in) and I think everything is going great so far!
I think he's maturing well too cos his adult pattern is appearing/darkening 😃
(*coughs* I had issues at first cos I used the filter cartridge from my other betta tank to get the cycle going... not realising that there's activated carbon in it 😐
I kept adding almond leaves and wondering where my tannins were dissappearing to until I cut the cartridge open and was like "ooh..")
^ he's always begging for food 😅
He's a Betta macrostoma, a wild betta fish native to the region I live in (He's not wild caught, his parents were bred in captivity)
SOMEHOW I forgot to post this but!!! I finally got a betta!!! her name is chappell for hopefully obvious reasons but my grandpa calls her gertrude or “gertie” and comes into my room daily to talk to her lmfao
here are some pics from when I first brought her home several weeks ago
I picked her out because she was so little and cute in the store but she ended up being SO much bigger than I thought. I’ve only kept male bettas in the past so having a female is a new experience for me but I’m glad I brought her home
People seemed to like the vid of her jumping for food so here's a compilation of my betta Bug being silly and getting the hang of jumping
Close encounters!
My beautiful koi betta Bisby has had a jumping spider neighbor taking advantage of her tank light to hunt bugs under for some time, and recently they met face to face! Very happy to capture each of them acknowledging the other - and Bisby's quick look back at me as if to say "you're seeing this too right?!" 🧡
Edit ✨️ For all those concerned, yes, she does have a lid! I'd just cleaned and was hanging out right there where I filmed from at my office desk. If you are new to fish keeping, please invest in a good lid or when picking setups, favor tank kits that include one!
She’s??? So small???
It blows my mind how tiny she is compared to every other Betta I’ve seen (in person).

Hello all! It’s been about two years since I last kept a Betta, and I was missing having a little water wiggle to wake up to each morning. So after what felt like forever waiting for the tank to cycle, I finally have a new boi!
I added a dose of seachem stressguard to be safe since he’s still clamped up from being in that pet store cup, and a dose of stability to be extra safe even though my parameters are where they should be because I’m paranoid. He’s a gorgeous, curious little guy.
I turned his lights off after I took the video and a few quick pictures; and then covered the tank with a towel to keep it nice and dark since I tend to leave a light on at night in my room. We’ll see how his fins look and how he eats in the morning!

This is the tank that I’m setting up for a new fish baby (honestly, probably a Betta). It’s a 20 gallon, 24"L x 12"W x 16"H. I’ve got substrate, a new heater, and some other bits and bobs on the way for it.
I’ve already got a lot of silk plants to put into it (they’re being disinfected rn), and I may order more if they don’t look like they’ll provide enough cover. I’ll be playing around with plant and hide placement once the substrate is here.
I’m really quite excited! I’ve missed waking up to a little wiggly baby and I can’t wait until everything is set up and cycled!

the Edith’s bettas are such voracious eaters! I love watching them get fed.
